Roasted Duck with Steamed Chicken Rice and Kopi Peng.

Well, I wasn't intending to blog about this kopitiam but a very familiar sign and the roasted duck rice had prompted me to do so. You see, awhile back, I purposely went to this place: http://www.alonediner.blogspot.com/2016/09/poh-kei-roasted-duck-taman-mayang.html to try out the roasted duck there. It was regarded as a very good one and it was the closest to my place so I went there to try it out but turns out to be a total disappointment. But it seems to me that I have mistaken. That said good roasted duck has actually moved to Restoran 328 which is nearby. The sign on their stall even said that they're Poh Kei.

It all started with me just wanting to go for my lunch before I call it a day and head back home. I have always wanted to try this kopitiam called Restoran 328 but most of the time I see as if that place does not seemed opened. So on this fine day, I decided to go there and eat which is just next to the St. Ignatius Church at Kelana Jaya. I was kinda disappointed when I went because I only saw about 3 stalls opened so I thought to myself, just go for something simple and just order the roasted duck with steamed chicken on the chicken rice stall in the front. I saw the sign saying that they're Poh Kei but I couldn't remember why the name sounded so familiar to me. So I waited for my food and I ordered my drink. Since there weren't many people there, it came quite soon and when they told me that it's RM9, I had a shock. I was wondering why is this rice stall so expensive. It only dawned on me when I started tasting the duck. It was very delicious. Just like how the reviews indicated that prompted me to visit the other one which I was unaware that they've shifted here. LOL. It all started to click when I tasted the excellent duck with it's raunchy gravy and looking back at the name and also it's higher than normal price. So THIS is Poh Kei. The other one I had was just a filler of the space. LOL. This was where they shifted. Not only were their Roasted Duck grave and meat delicious, their chili too seems to have a distinct unique taste which I enjoyed very much. I can even eat just the chili with the rice on it's on. This definitely is a very good recommended place for eating roasted duck since it's so near my place but of course, I still feel Sunrise is better. But then again, I haven't eaten Sunrise roasted duck for over a decade. Anyway, this is good enough and very satisfying. A definite recommendation from me for the roasted duck. I believe it's best paired with the roasted pork because well, the steamed chicken was nothing to shout about. In fact, it's pathetic. LOL. But be prepared to fork out the premium price for this. However, I still feel it's worth it. I shall return to eat here again.

Final Verdict:
8/10. Definitely on the A category for me. A definite to return for me especially being so near my place. LOL.

Duck Leg Confit & Sangria (with White Wine)

After a long day working, I decided to unwind at 2Ox located at the Row which was famously known as Asian Heritage Row and is known for their notorious nightlife. By the way, 2Ox is not twenty x but rather 2 ox. LOL. I really thought the O was an 0 at first.

So I arrived there fairly early but of course parking over there was a breeze right in front of the restaurant, the catch is....you have to pay RM10 for the parking. Pfft. These scalpers. Anyway, since it's right in front of the restaurant, it's okay. Sitting outside, the menu was already on the table so I just need to pick it up and browse through it. It looks like they're just readied for dinner not too long ago since most of the staff were merely lingering around inside and I can't see anyone that's manning the outside of the restaurant. But there's 1 that comes in and out serving a tourist at a table where the guy seems to be busy with his Apple laptop. I soon made up my mind on what to ordered and signaled to a gentleman to take my orders.

Along came the bread as an appetizer with some greenish oil condiments to go with the bread. The complimentary appetizer was great with the bread being good just by eating on it's own and that dip that comes with it goes very well with the bread. I was asked if I liked more bread once I finished but of course I declined since I wanna save some space for my Duck Leg Confit and my Sangria.

The Duck Leg Confit was beautifully cooked and glisten along with the ambiance light and that it's carefully placed on top of some beans and the Dauphinois potato gratin. The beans and potatoes provided quite a crunch to the dish while the orange sauce that accompanies the Duck Leg Confit went very well with the meat. The end product of the duck is simply delicious and it may seemed like just a lovely looking dish but the taste did exceed what it looked like. It was delicious through and through and as I peel the layer of skin away to expose the inside meat of the duck, I was greeted with a steaming hot delicious, moist meat. Throughout my meal, the duck stayed hot and warmed throughout and so there was never a moment where it dropped in it's tastefulness. I was truly satisfied with it and so I would say the RM80 price on it is what it is truly worth. As for the Sangria, there was a many mixture of orange and apples in it thus giving it a refreshing taste. The white wine that was in the mixture was nice and all in all, a good Sangria nonetheless.

After I slowly enjoyed off my drink, I headed back home with satisfaction.

Total Wallet Damage:
RM108. RM80 for the duck, RM28 for the Sangria. There's 10% service charge involved and 6% GST.

Final Verdict:
7/10. Food was excellent and drinks were not bad. Service was okay.

Roast Duck Rice and Chinese Tea Ice

It started to drizzle when I was around that vicinity. Not certain of my way around, I took shelter at this food court and decided to try out some of it's dishes.

By the time of 4pm plus, the hawker stalls' staffs were all on taking-it-easy mode since during this time, the lunch crowd has long gone and the dinner crowd has yet to come it while those who's in search of teatime won't visit such a place due to it's heavy meals and environment that aren't as pleasant to be staying around. But even at a time of 4pm, there's still some people around and even after I've came in and had my meal, there were some people who started to come in for their meals already.

There's a lot of hawker stalls around and unlike normal kopitiam places, this one has most still opened to serve customers. They probably operate at night too hence the still open state. I guess they're just getting ready for the dinner crowd and just wind down a little instead of closing till dinnertime. The signs on all the stalls were big and easy to see what each stall sells. This truly indicate that each stall owner is definitely there for the long haul since it's not easy nor cheap to change the signs. I decided to try out the roast duck rice over there.

The butcher was having his meal while the rest of the family members (it's a family business) were sitting at one of the round table nearby chit chatting. When they saw me walking towards their stall and stopping there, an old man approached me quickly and asked me what do I want. I'm amazed at the pace he moved and also surprised that he's also the person who takes orders, serves and receives the payment. Interesting to see such an old fella working there. It didn't take long till I receive my meal and the drinks were quite quick to get to me too even though it's quite a big place. Now that's efficiency.

Unfortunately, this place is a bit dearer with the Roast Duck Rice at RM7.50 while the Chinese Tea Ice costs RM0.70. So it's a cheap but not that cheap place. The roast duck was quite okay with some hits and misses. The rice was well okay but the chili was too watery. The duck's okay and the sauce although tasty seems to be weak in it's taste. The soup didn't do any good as it was almost tasteless. But nonetheless, it's a hearty enough meal to fill your tummy. As for the Chinese Tea Ice, well, it's just that. A bit too pricey for Chinese Tea Ice.

So there you have it, another Cheap but not that Cheap kopitiam. *Sigh*. Cheap kopitiam to eat is becoming extinct. At least there's still Section 17, Petaling Jaya to fall back on. So far, that's the most reliable of them all.

RM7.50 for the Duck Rice and RM0.70 for the Chinese Tea Ice.

Final Verdict:
6/10. Huge place so there's bound to be seats even though peak hour but way too limited in parking space. Food and drinks a bit more expensive then my expectation but there's a lot of variety here for food. That's lovely.

Their Set Dinner, I chose the Amber Chin's Signature Aglio-olio with Pork Belly and to drink, White Wine. Tomato Soup.

"So what are you doing in Penang?" That seems to be the theme of my visit there. Many seemed to ask me this question and each time I'm at the receiving end of this question during that day, I pause for a moment and my mind will just be slated blank. To tell you the truth, I don't even know why I drove all the way to Penang at such a late time of the day just to have a bite and depart back to PJ on the same day. I guess all I wanted to do is distract my mind by keeping myself busy.

Let me start earlier. The day started off with me working from morning till after lunch time where I can't really recall whether I did eat my lunch or breakfast or not but one thing's for sure, I started heading for Penang when the clock surpass 3pm. I stopped by at Sungkai to refuel my car and after that, it was all the way straight to Penang non-stop. When I reached Penang, it had already turned 7 o'clock. Just the perfect time for dinner. And so I headed to Hutton Mansion Wine Haus. It started to rain heavy when I arrive but that didn't deter me.

Hutton Mansion Wine Haus is actually the restaurant that's associated with the Hutton Mansion boarding hostel. I guess that's the main business as oppose to this F&B side. When I was there, I was the only person to enter for food. I was hospitably welcomed and been shown the menu. The sofa area of the place looks congenial, cozy and tones you down a notch. The lighting gives me a sleepy feel and puts me at ease. They allowed me time to look at the menu and I went for their Dinner Set which consists of many main course choices....just different pricing. LOL. As I await for my pasta, I gazed out of the window and get lost in the rain. Over on the opposite side, there's a wine shop and there wasn't much of anyone walking by the road except for a few tourists.

Pretty soon, I was served my wine. The wine was easy on the throat and wasn't heavy on the alcohol level. It provides a certain sweetness syncing with some soft touch of sourness. It certainly was a very pleasant to the mouth feel. I was soon served the appetizer which they name it "Duck Salad with Orange Sauce". Okay, so it's more of a descriptive name rather than an intriguing one but at least you know what you're getting. LOL. Though there's merely 2 peels of mandarin orange on top, the citrus taste permeates throughout the whole of the salad due to it being splashed with the orange sauce and the strong taste only is rivaled by the duck's salty taste. The duck is thick in it's slices and was tender. A nice combination in all even though the greens merely provided a crunch rather than it's refreshing leafy taste.

The next dish is the Tomato Soup. It's served together with a garlic bread which proved to be an odd combination. Without the garlic bread, the Tomato Soup taste way better so I much prefer separating the 2 to eat. The tomato soup was rich though not too thick. Enough for a satisfying slurp that I lapped up the whole dish.

Next came the main course. Garnishing includes some olives that provided some taste of sweetness and I can see sprinkles of cheese but my tongue fail to detect any of it when I put it in my mouth. The pork belly was delightful and some has a crispy texture outside and provides a somewhat chewy taste. It can also sit there for awhile and the pork belly is still warm when I ate it even to the last bit. It was a little too spicy for me since they spruce it up with cili padi but nothing a little water can't combat.

The staff of the place was very hospitable but also gave me ample space I need and only approach when necessary and occasionally just to get my feedback. Not bad even though I was the only one there, they still made sure that everything's alright with me. With a little wine, low lighting and the rain outside, it made me feel rather sleepy and so after that, I decided to go grab some coffee at The Safe Room down the road instead before heading off home. Thanks for the hospitality, Hutton Mansion Wine House.

Just RM48 all in. Pretty sweet! No mention of GST nor service charge anywhere so I guess they don't charge.

Final Verdict:
7/10. The food was good and the selection of wine was nice. The only thing is the Tomato Soup does not go with Garlic Bread though you can just eat it separately. Although all the food is good, I just felt as if somethings missing. It's like it could've been perfect if something is added to it. Or maybe there could be dessert? LOL. Or maybe it's just because I had one of the most awesome set lunch ever at Sage Restaurant & Bar, The Gardens not too long before this and I just can't stop comparing that to this. That's not a fair comparison. Haha.

Roasted Duck Rice.

I've always love eating roasted duck and so far I've always fancied eating at Sunrise and Loong Foong Seafood which both are by far still the best that I've ever had. But eating at those location were only when I'm with someone and looking at the ever crowded place usually puts me off in going on my own. So then on this day I decided to try out Poh Kei Roasted Duck which is very near my house.

Housed in a typical shoplot that looks more like a house, it sits at the corner on it's own and from the outside, you wouldn't even know that it's a place to eat since it does not carry big signage to indicate that it's a restaurant. Rather, it's more towards the hearsay of people that you would know what this place is. Arriving at near lunchtime, the place was almost deserted with 2 groups of patrons there to have their share of rice. The only thing that's known to me at this place was the rice stall which carries a good number of different meat. It was only after I sat down awhile and started glancing over to the other side of this place is that I saw a forlorn noodles stall there which is actually opened for business. But today's mission was to try out the roasted duck rice and so that's what I went for. There really wasn't that many people who came by when I was there but they have an optimistically great number of meat displayed at their stall. I must say wow.

Pretty soon my Roast Duck Rice came and I got to tasting it. To tell you the truth, I don't see it as a really good roasted duck and to me it was only average. It didn't have that crispy skin texture that I so love nor the great tasting duck with it's sauce that would make me craving for me. All I'm getting is a decent average tasting duck. But the rice portion was quite big though and that's probably the best plus point of it all. Other than that, I don't see anything else really good to this and to me it's just another average rice stall.

I wonder what happen to the time where it boasted many people lining up for their roasted duck meat? I guess, this day just wasn't it. Maybe it's due to the long holiday that had people travelling away from their home but all I saw on that day were trickles of customers who's some are not even there for roast duck. Oh well. I guess it's time for me to return to Sunrise or eat at Loong Foong Seafood for roasted duck again. I probably should do it on my own one day should I be able to defeat the crowd. :(

Total Wallet Damage:
RM7. Quite expensive for a Roasted Duck Rice but that was the price that I was charged.

Final Verdict:
5.5/10. Price is high, duck is average. The rice portion is big though so that's probably the only plus point to me. I think I prefer the one at Glenmarie more where it's cheaper and the duck tasted better.

It was the last day that I get to see a friend of mine. After this, it will be a year before she returns so what I've decided was to go to the airport to send her off. Along with me, I brought along another friend of mine since she missed our gathering the night before and this was her last chance to see the other friend off before her only returning after a year. So I picked her up and off we went to the airport. But unfortunately, when I arrived, there was a long line of cars awaiting to enter the parking area and my friend's parents were anxiously calling her to depart to the departure gate. So I forsake my need to see my friend off for 1 last time before it will be a year till her return and straight went to the departure area and let the friend who was with me to see her off instead. When she returned to my car, she said it wasn't a good feeling sending people off. Ya, not a good feeling isn't it? That's why I cried when I was being sent off by my host family in Japan when I was there. We grew so fondly attached to each other. But then again, I'm a guy who has trouble interacting with humankind in general and that's why I can safely say that I lost most if not all of my friends when I committed social suicide by not being an events blogger anymore. Now that's why I dine alone most of the time because nobody has the time nor the interest to do so with me. Oh well. I guess I brought that onto me. Can't wait to say goodbye to this godforsaken place about 5 years from now.

Anyway, so I duped the friend who was with me to have dinner with me since just sending our friend off would be a waste of an opportunity coming out all the way. Haha. So she suggested that she wanted to try Take Eat Easy which is at Bandar Sri Menjalara. So I just drive according to how Google Maps take me. I was quite down and a little antisocial that day so I mumbled when I replied my friend that night and she had to strain most of the time to understand what I'm saying. LOL. I apologize. I instinctively did it and it wasn't my intention to make it hard to converse with me but I was feeling down. But she kept on talking to me and so I made an effort to reply and talk to her more and more to keep the conversation going. LOL.

We arrived at the place after a long drive and that place looked awfully familiar. It was then I realized that it was Wisma Fiamma with the familiar looking Tesco opposite. I remember coming here a long time back to review Overtime outlet here a long time ago way back. I see that it has now turned into Take Eat Easy. LOL. A big sign indicating Take Eat Easy greets right at the front of the building and since it was Sunday with the many shoppers and people coming out to eat here, I went over at Tesco and parked at the side where it's not a designated parking spot but I made sure that I didn't block anybody's way. So we proceeded indoors to Take Eat Easy.

The place is huge with three entrance doors that upon entering with come to it's bakery section for people to just buy bread and pastry stuff at that area. But since we were there for dinner, we went to beside it where the dining area is with loads of chairs and tables and we were seated by one of the staff. Unlike the Bakery section where it's brightly lit, the dining area has pocket areas of light above each of their tables creating a quite romantic atmosphere because other than your table area, there's darkness on those areas that aren't on a table. We decided on what to order and awaited for our meal. Their juice are contained in a bulb shape container so it's as if you're drinking out of a lightbulb. LOL. And because the shape of a lightbulb can't stand on it's own, it's put in a tub of ice. That is the quickest of them all to arrive. A moderate waiting time later, my Hazelnut Cafe Latte arrived. It gives out quite an overtly weird taste to me and the mixture of the hazelnut syrup taste together with the coffee taste didn't seem to play well with each other. It's as if they were at war. The coffee taste was very, very mild while the hazelnut taste was the most prominent. It however, gives out a smidgen of a sweet taste coming out to play occasionally and that's what weirds me out and bugs me. It's not the kind of coffee that I like.

The food came at a slow snail's pace and it slowly trickled in. The Pasta were the first to arrive but I decided to wait for all of the food to take a nice food shot of everything before I proceeded to dig in. That contributed to a deterioration in taste since a lot of it went cold as we await for everything to arrive. With the last item (or should I say mains since my ice cream is served as a dessert) which was the Pizza arriving at our table, it's time to dig in.

The Pasta which is the Aglio Olio with smoked duck and mushrooms on it was okay and didn't really gave much of an excitement. The smoked duck wasn't the taste I was expecting, It had an oriental taste to it and resembles much of duck that's served more at those Chinese dining locations (think roasted ducks) rather than the smoked duck western version counterpart. The mushroom gave off a very strong taste and it overwhelms the pasta. The pasta in itself were a little spicy but it's just right for me. Their coating with the oil wasn't too much and just right. That's the part that they did right the most. It also comes with 2 breadsticks on it which tasted fine.

The Fried Calamari wasn't much of a squid because I can barely taste the squid. All I tasted was a quite doughy sensation and that envelops the whole taste of this item. Though the condiment that was supposed to be to accompany the Fried Calamari was wasabi mayo dip, I got nothing that tasted like wasabi at all. All I got was mayo and I ate the rest on it's own without the condiment. This wasn't one that I would recommend to order.

Perhaps the best thing of them all that we ordered was the Quadro Pizza. Though it's supposed to contain 4 types of cheese in em and it's supposed to be a "cheesy" pizza (LOL), the cheese taste wasn't that strong at all. But it balances well with the thin crust that's resting upon the hot place. I guess what of the reason why it was best was probably because it's the last item to arrive and therefore the warmest of the food since we started off eating only when everything arrived. LOL. But of course, it is the best among all. Much more worth than the pasta since it's the same price.

Finally, they brought me my dessert which was the ice cream Disco-late which has assorted Mini Gelato Balls with strawberries, peaches, whipped cream and an Oreo cookie on top. Well, it's normal ice cream lah. :)

Ambiance-wise, I would say it's a nice place for a date since it looks so romantic and the lighting above tables beautifies the food's appearance. Other than that, service wasn't all that fantastic but I guess it's cause they had to cover such a wide area and it was dark at certain places so it may be harder to spot a person calling for service when night comes. The armchair seat was really comfortable and to have a pillow for back support as well. You could really fall asleep after a meal if you were to slouch and let yourself slump on the armchair. LOL.

Total Wallet Damage:
Well, altogether including the Juice and Mushroom Soup which I did not try amounts to RM133.75. RM23 for the pasta, RM23 for the pizza, RM16 for the lightbulb looking juice (LOL), RM17 for calamari, RM14.80 for the ice cream, RM12 for the coffee and RM15.80 for the mushroom soup. 10% service charge and 6% GST imposed.

Final Verdict:
6/10. Though it's not a place I'm likely to return since it's at an area where there's loads of different eateries around, I'd still give it a 6 out of 10. It is average and may considered pricey for that kind of taste, but it does have a very nice looking ambiance and with some great company, this is a nice place to have a chatter and get to know someone better. :D

Roast Duck Rice and Chinese Tea Ice

DISCLAIMER: This was not a lone dining experience.

Opposite from the Meng Kee Char Siew restaurant where many people sing praises on it's heavenly Char Siew and whatnot lies a lesser known stall but to me is a better restaurant called Restoran Hing Loong.

Over here, the family business are better known for their Roasted Duck where it's glistening skin hangs upon the makeshift stall that sits just outside of the restaurant for preparation. Make no mistake, that's the only stall in this restaurant. There's nothing else here unlike usual hawker stall so it's something like the Meng Kee Char Siew restaurant where it has it's own restaurant by itself. On this day, my colleague out of the blue invited me out for lunch just so I can ferry her around and that she also wanted to buy some baking flour as well. But as we were out on our way for food, we had changed our minds about four times before finally deciding upon Restaurant Hing Loong to have our lunch.

And so we sat right down and ordered what they're most famous for, their Roasted Duck Rice. To wash down all the grease and grime, we had the Chinese Tea Ice to wash down those oil. In this place, you can sit down first and a person will come and take your food order while the drink order will be separately done by someone else. The ambiance of the place is not much being just a normal kopitiam kind of restaurant but only thing is that there's only one stall.

It didn't take long for the order to be brought to us. Well, it shouldn't anyway. Because it's just make sure what was the order, chop up the correct meat and serve with the rice and gravy and soup. The amount of meat given for my meal was adequate and sufficient. In fact, it looks a little more than some places give out. The duck meat glistens and beckons me to bite into it as I salivate while taking a decent picture of it. The free soup was just a normal plain soup with not very thick taste but good enough. As I always like to do, I would drench my rice with some of the hot soup to make the rice maintain a warm temperature. As expected, the duck meat was nice and juicy. Most of the time, duck meat are tough and hard to get meat off the bone but this is not the case though a certain amount of effort is still required. The duck may not be better than Loong Foong Seafood Restaurant nor Sunrise but it does hold it's own to be a good duck meat to consume.

I find this place a better location to have rice than Meng Kee Char Siew because Meng Kee's portion is small and always leave me not really satisfied in eating and I'm a person who never order extra rice. On top of that Meng Kee Char Siew is pricey and is always full of people as oppose to Hing Loong where Hing Loong's price is just ordinary like any other rice stalls at your local kopitiams. Their spacing between tables are also good giving you ample amount of room although I must say there are times they may be filled with people as well. However, you're still assured with a lot of room at your seating place.

In addition to their duck meat, their roasted pork are also not bad though they're not the best around. Still, it's more than good. So if Meng Kee looks way too intimidating with it's always crowded atmosphere, this is a very good alternative place. Plus, there's nowhere else to get duck meat around here. Well, not that I know of.

Total Wallet Damage:
I can't really remember. If I'm not mistaken, it's RM6 for the Roasted Duck Rice and 50 sen (?) for the Chinese Tea Ice.

Final Verdict:
7/10. Give this place a try. It's quite good in my books.
