A-Lone Diner Movie Special: Inside Out (2015)

So there I was at 1 Utama yesterday in order to catch a movie. Initially wanted to use a movie pass that I obtained from a friend to redeem any movie I like but later decided against it since I wasn't with anybody and figured it would benefit someone better who is a party of 2 (or more). And so I stepped into the vicinity of TGV and started looking around. There were a lot of people lining up for a movie. Holy crap. I panicked out and started to sit down over at the seats awhile to muster my courage before approaching a stranger. After about half an hour of chilling at the couch area of TGV, I finally managed to psych myself up and walked up to 2 boys who were in line for a movie. I told them since they were planning to watch a movie anyway, why not just take this voucher and redeem it for free, which they did.

Feeling good about it, I walked off and headed for my lunch at Old Asia. 1 Utama were packed with people despite a lot of others who went for Bersih 4.0.  But while a lot of food outlets were crowded with many people, Old Asia just had enough to keep them busy and wasn't crowded nor packed to the brim. Hence, it was easy for me to get a spot.

After finishing off my lunch, I walked over to the cinema again and bought a ticket to watch Inside Out. Initially wanted to watch Fantastic Four despite many people saying it was crap but I missed the 1pm movie and was also thinking of Ant-Man but the next show wasn't until 5pm so I chose the one movie that's closest to the time then and it was Inside Out.

Entered into the hall and when the lights dimmed and commercials played I chuckled a little as a little girl ask her mommy why is it so dark.

There is a short Pixar animation entitled Lava before the actual Inside Out movie that is entirely made in a song with a Hawaiian feel to it. It's about a volcano who is by himself as he watches all the couples of things around and longs and hopes for that the "earth, sea and sky" would bestow upon him someone to "Lava" a pun to substitute love since he's a volcano. LOL. I thought that was cheesy but yet it does sound "punny" to me. Haha. After millions of years singing his song of hope and yearning for a mate, he was down to his final one as his lava begins to "turn to stone" and there's just enough for him to sing one last time as he goes to extinction. But little did he know, there's a volcano under the sea hearing his song everyday and made her lava grew where she finally felt it was time for her to come out of the water. However, when she emerged, she could not see him since he's now so tiny and he wanted to let her know but was unable to since he had no more lava in him to sing it out anymore and disappears under the sea. But she remembered what the song meant to her and so she started singing which brought the volcano back to life and out of the water and of course, lived happily ever after kinda thing. I do find this short animation beautiful and I loved the song. Sounds like Somewhere Over the Rainbow that was sang in the melody of a Hawaiian feel to it.

Okay. Enough of that. Inside Out is about a girl named Riley, whom after born comes her emotion characters with Joy being the predominant one in her life and thereafter came Sadness, Fear, Anger and Disgust. Although the creators initially had more characters but scrapped the idea since it only complicated matters and hence sticked to these five. The five characters of emotions were the ones that control Riley at a panel on decisions and actions that she does. Joy is the head of them all and so Riley was mostly a happy individual. The five characters actually were based on a shape of some sort in their way to resemble the actual feelings. Joy is actually a star, Sadness is actually a teardrop, Fear is actually a raw nerve, Anger is a square brick and Disgust, a broccoli.

Whenever Riley makes a memory, it will be like an orb-like ball which glows according to the color of the predominant emotion during those times the memory was made. If it's a core memory which shapes her personality, it will be brighter than usual and will go into a special compartment where it will create an island specific to the quality/personality or will power that up even more. Joy being the most predominant of all take charge of everything in running Riley while Sadness is the one who is always sidelined away from doing anything.

Handling Riley's life was like a walk in the park daily till the parents decided to move to San Francisco. Things weren't as expected from what Riley perceived. During that time, Joy still had control over it until Sadness started touching some of the orb memories and it started to turn blue. Joy tried her best to prevent Sadness from doing anything but then a core memory that's blue in color started to come out. Joy wanted to prevent the blue core memory and from her haste, she accidentally took out all of the other core memories and in the end got her and Sadness sucked out of the Headquarters and out into the endless maze of Riley's mind. From there on, Joy and Sadness has to find their way back to the Headquarters and in Joy's absence, Anger, Fear and Disgust tried running the panel controls which proved disastrous. Watch the movie to find out how it turns out.

I quite like this show and you can't help but think about how inside your brain would work with your own five emotion characters inside you. I also like how this show tells you that being sad sometimes isn't necessarily a bad thing and this even applies to a person who's always cheerful too. Sometimes, there may be things that bring you down, but it's okay to grieve. It gives you relief and in this movie's case, it brings the family unit closer to be there for each other. I quite like this show and I give it 3.9 out of 5.
