Grilled Venison with Tamarind Sauce and a cafe latte while my colleague ordered Seafood Spaghetti with water
DISCLAIMER: This was not a lone dining experience.
I was excited when I saw the sign for Melur & Thyme opening an outlet at Empire Shopping Gallery since I frequent that place often and so I visited when they started to open along with a colleague of mine. Wasting no time looking at the menu that they had, I started to order the Grilled Venison with Tamarind Sauce and a latte to cure me of my sleepiness. My colleague not knowing what to order hold on her order and asked the waiter to key in my order first while she contemplated further on what to consume. She consulted me on some of the foreign things that she see on the menu such as a croquette and other things. I tried my best to help her decide on her food and in the end, she ended up calling for the Seafood Spaghetti with soft shell crab.
It was quite a wait for the food and there weren't many people around too. Imagine if they were to be serving a full house, I fail to grasp how long you would have to wait for your order. The place has a mystical charm to it with yellowish tint light bulbs that emits a soothing effect that lulls me to sleepyville. The Latte soon came through and it don't even have any latte art on it. It is a mere Italian or franchise style sort of coffee that gives you a kick to keep you awake. The coffee weren't that bad but a little too bitter for the kind that I'm looking for. So this isn't the third wave coffee type of cafe after all. Anyway, the only thing wrong that I did not like the coffee is the very bitter lingering aftertaste that protrudes out like a sore thumb at the back of my throat.
A much more long wait later, my Grilled Venison with Tamarind Sauce appeared in front of me. The portion was really tiny. I guess they weren't kidding when they called it tapas. It can either be served with bread or rice which I opt for the rice. The rice portion was way more huge than the meat and sauce combined and I was wondering how am I to eat it together. Anyway, the venison together with the tamarind sauce reminded me of satay because that's exactly what it tasted like to me. The small pieces of venison tasted like beef on a satay stick and the tamarind sauce tasted like peanut sauce to me. Bottom line is, it just isn't the kind of food that I like. So to me, the best thing out of all that is the white rice in itself.
As for my colleague's dish, it certainly took it's time even longer than mine to arrive to her. I was already almost finishing my food and that got me worried about my colleague and so I had to inquire the staff to check on her order. Eventually, it did came and she did have her lunch after all. I tried a bit of the pasta and to me, the sauce may tasted okay but I would prefer it to be creamier and more thicker in it's taste instead of voluminous soaking up half the pasta noodles in it.
I also tested out their WiFi and let me tell you, you can forget about it. Although their outlet is just a small max 3 aisles of tables, the WiFi is not good at all. It keeps dropping and I can barely surf anything with it. In the end, I had to abandon it in order to search some things out. Well, at least that's how the condition was like while I was there. There's also the big disappointment of them charging RM2 just for 2 glasses of filtered water. Pfft. I shouldn't have asked for it.
Total Wallet Damage:
Inclusive of my colleague's order, it amounted to RM96.80. Yup. Darn expensive for mediocre food. Grilled Venison RM29, Latte RM13, water RM2 for 2, Seafood Spaghetti RM39. There's 10% service charge and a 6% GST.
Final Verdict:
2/10. I'd avoid it at all costs. It's expensive, inexperience waiters (this I can't really pinpoint on them because they're newly opened), food is only so-so, WiFi non existence. No wonder there's not many people going there to eat in spite of it being new.
